Are there certain parts of your home that seem dark and depressing? Do your eyes have to strain to read your favourite magazine after the sun goes down, and you have to rely on your inadequate indoor lighting? Studies have shown that people who are satisfied with the lighting around them are happier and more satisfied with their home in general.
One of the best ways to improve the lighting in your home is to increase natural light. Choose your window coverings carefully, whether blinds or shutters, so they don’t block out all the light during the day. Best of all, natural light is brighter than artificial light, and it’s free!
Indirect lighting is best for ceiling fixtures, especially in areas like the home office. Direct light can make your eyes get tired more easily and can negatively affect your productivity. Make sure all lamps and lighting fixtures are properly spaced and not too close to the walls, so all areas of the room are evenly lit, and there aren’t any sharp shadows or harsh glares on mirrors or television screens.
Choosing the Right Lamps & Lighting for Your Space
When it comes to decorating, many of us understand a bit about colour palettes or even how to properly mix fabrics and textures. However, many more of us are left lost and confused when it comes to choosing things like accessories or lamps & lighting for your space. Here at Wasaga Beach Decorating, we would love to assist you in making your space stylish and bright with the right lamps & lighting. Here are a few things you can do for your space when it comes to choosing the right lighting.
- Sizing is everything. An overly large or wide lamp in a smaller space will feel awkward and crowded, but you don’t want it to be too small either. As a general rule, if you are going to put a lamp on a table, it shouldn’t be more than 1.25x the table height. Being too tall will cause the lamp to look off-balance even if it still fits on the table. You will also want to take the base of the table into consideration when looking at sizing. Your lampshade should never be wider than the base of the table.
- Your lamp materials matter. When looking at lamps, think about the design of the room. Is it traditional or contemporary? Colourful or monochromatic? Choose a lamp that will blend with the style of the room. Furthermore, think about the lampshade materials. Do you want your lamp for reading? If so, choose a lampshade that lets the light out.
- Don’t be afraid to be bold! Choosing a lamp that is colourful is a great way to incorporate colour without risk. Some experts recommend looking at a piece of artwork or another design element in the room and picking a complementary colour from that for your lamp.

It’s also very important to be able to control the amount of light in each room for different situations. One easy solution is to install dimmer switches that allow you to adjust how bright the light is at any time. Desk lamps with three levels of lighting are also common.
